“Doula” is a Greek word meaning “a woman who serves”. Another term used is Labor Assistant. I am a non-medical support person to a mother during her pregnancy, through labor and delivery, and during the early postpartum period. I understand, respect and trust the birth process.
A labor assistant/doula:
· Stays at the laboring mother’s side for the entire labor
· Helps mom and partner stick to their birth plan
· Understands and trusts the birth process
· Provides support
· Gives mom information to be able to help with decision-making
· Facilitates communication between parents and caregivers.
The benefits of a labor assistant/doula to the mother:
· 50% reduction of cesarean rates
· 25% shorter labors
· 60% reduction in epidural requirements
· 40% reduction in forceps
· 40% reduction in pitocin use
· 30% decrease in use of pain medication (narcotics)
· Increase in success with breastfeeding
· Reduction in postpartum depression
· Better mother-infant interaction
· Flexibility in labor and birthing option
The benefits of a labor assistant/doula to the partner:
· It allows the partner to watch the baby being born while the mother is being supported and taken care of
· It gives the partner self-confidence
· It allows the partner to be with the baby during the first set of medical procedures while the mother is being attended to and taken care of
· Helps with the partner’s anxiety

Mothers need to know that their
care and their choices won't be compromised by birth politics.

"Pregnancy is 40 weeks at term.
Your baby will never be easier to take care of than it is right there inside of you. Don't rush it!"
